The Thresher-class destroyer is the most numerous type of destroyer ever produced, boasting a production run of 550 warships in service to the Phoenix Republic--variants and subclasses notwithstanding.
The Hikaze-class destroyers (陽風型駆逐艦) [trans: Solar wind] could nominally be considered a subtype of the Thresher, as they share a common main hull and reactor, but were designed to fulfill a different role.
The Thresher is primarily a gunboat designed to intercept and destroy enemy fleet pickets in fleet engagements and provide light fire support to cruiser divisions.
Meanwhile, the HIkaze is more of a torpedo boat, slinging anti-capital ship torpedoes into battle while using its high maneuverability to dodge enemy return fire. It also mounts flagship command equipment to offset the Sakurajima Federation's lack of intermediate-sized warships, and sports more efficient, but slower-accelerating main engines to help fulfill its secondary role as a patrol ship in contested territory.

These destroyers take inspiration from three sources, all of them destroyers. You have elements of the US Navy Fletcher-class in the Thresher's numerosity and armament layout. On the other side, you have the IJN's Fubuki-class for the Hikaze on the armament.
This is overall blended into the idea of the modern Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, of which the JMSDF's Kongo-class is designed from. Like the Kongo, the Hikaze mounts flagship equipment and use as a patrol ship.
