The demands of a growing and active navy necessitated the creation of the Yellowstone-class Large Cruiser to fill system/sector flagship command roles in places where Battleships or Carriers would be politically untenable, or otherwise overkill. The main demand was the necessity of large hulls in which to mount the flagship-grade command, control, and communications equipment necessary to coordinate combat and maneuvers across an entire solar system--which could not be done on Heavy Cruisers such as the Boseman-class without sacrificing their capabilities.
While the Phoenix Republic Navy preferred the designation of Large Cruiser, there was no stopping other nations from calling them 'Pocket Battleships' or 'Battlecruisers' due to their size and armament.
Shown are some members of CRUDIV-44, a mixed cruiser division composed of the PRS Olympia, a Yellostone-class Large Cruiser, two Boseman-class Heavy Cruisers (PRS Charlotte, PRS Harbintown), two St. Helens-class Light Cruisers (PRS St. Helens, PRS Blackstone), and eight escorting Thresher-class Destroyers.
